Specialized Services

Long Term Acute Care hospitals are usually staffed with Hospitalists. Given the shortage of Intensivists (critical care specialists) across the country the internal medicine physician is on an island if the hospital and community are unable to recruit experts in Critical Care. When a critical situation arises the staff physician is relegated to transferring the patient to an ER that will accept the patient. After treatment and stabilization the patient is shipped back to the LTACH. This constant back and forth is costly and detrimental to the patient experience. OSC TeleIntensivist programs solve for this.
- Intensivists specialize in critical care medicine and are able to treat and care for really sick patients with many comorbidities, enabling the hospital to reduce send outs to an acute care emergency department (ED).
- Ventilation management is a skill set Intensivists are highly trained in. They can reduce the number of days a patient is on a ventilator. A reduction in time on ventilation increases positive patient outcomes.
- When patients deteriorate to a life threatening level (“crash”) a TeleIntensivist remotely runs the code like a quarterback runs their team.
- Rapid response times mean patients are seen at the earliest possible moment by a specialist with years of experience in critical care medicine.
A reduction in RTAs saves the hospital money. Hiring a remote Intensivist team saves the hospital money. Critical care patients cared for by Intensivists is a recognized best practice.
OSC has been covering Long Term Acute Care hospitals for 6+ years. Our team of Critical Care specialists know when it’s safe to treat and retain patients and when it’s necessary to send them out for emergency services. In some cases it may be necessary simply because the LTACH doesn’t have the needed diagnostic equipment or other specialty service available. Barring the lack of these tools or skills the OSC team of experts increase the acuity of patients retained. Just night coverage or 24/7, the OSC team is your partner to better patient care.
